Until recently, fillings were made from a silver
and mercury amalgam. Composite resin fillings were created as
an alternative to traditional metal fillings. Made of a plastic
dental resin, composite resin fillings are strong, durable and
made to match the color of your teeth. The composite resin is
bonded to the tooth as opposed to wedging the filling in place,
which is how metal fillings are applied.
procedure, done under a local anesthetic to numb
the area, consists of preparing the tooth by removing
any decayed portions while preserving as much of
the natural tooth as possible. If the tooth's decayed
area is close to a nerve, a special liner is used
to protect the nerve.
composite resin filling is applied in thin layers and built
up to form the completed filling. A special dental light is
used to harden each layer, forming a strong, durable filling.
It is also common to replace old, worn-out silver alloy fillings
with the more natural-looking composite resin filling. Because
there are no known health hazards to the resin (unlike metal
fillings), some patients report feeling physically better
after replacing their old fillings. Back to
a large, deep cavity or crack can cause infection in the
tooth's pulp. If not
treated, the infection
may spread, causing the bone to erode and form pockets
of pus. This condition is known as an abcess and can be quite
painful. In order to save the tooth from extraction, a root
canal treatment may be necessary.
under local anesthetic, root canal therapy is painless and
can be completed in one visit. If the tooth is extremely
weak, a titanium post is inserted into the canal filling
to reinforce the tooth and a crown is applied
over the tooth to strengthen its structure and restore a
appearance. If a crown is necessary, a second visit is required
to place the permanent crown. Back to top
Periodontal (Gum) Disease
disease (or periodontal disease) is often a major cause
of tooth loss in adults.
It is believed that more than 70 percent of adults in
the United States have some level of gum disease. Although
genetics play a small role, dentists agree that gum
disease is directly related to an individual's personal
hygiene. The disease begins with
inflamation and infection of the tissues that provide tooth
painless and often goes undetected.
